From August 1-5, 2011, Pettit Kohn Associate Christine Mueller along with four other attorneys spent their mornings mentoring gifted elementary and middle school students at Cal State University San Marcos. The program “On My Honor: Civics Symposium for Students” is an interactive program for gifted students to experience first-hand the intricacies of our legal system.
The week long summer symposium is co-sponsored by Cal State University San Marcos, the San Diego Superior Court and the North County Bar Association. The Symposium was conducted at CSUSM and the Vista Courthouse.
The Symposium is designed to provide a fun and interactive learning experience to teach students about the role of the judicial branch through interaction with judges, attorneys and court staff. Students learned about the state and federal court system and the Bill of Rights, and were assigned to represent fictitious clients in a civil or criminal proceeding. The volunteer attorney coaches helped students prepare their case and demonstrated a mock witness examination. On Friday, the students had an opportunity to deliver their closing arguments at the Vista Courthouse.
Attorney mentors include: Larry Campitiello (Sullivan Hill Lewin Rez & Engel), Ron Cozad (Law Offices of Ronald J. Cozad), Wayne Templin (Law Office of Wayne Templin), Susan Curran (Curran & Curran Law), Christine Mueller (Pettit Kohn Ingrassia & Lutz), as well as a volunteer court reporter Mercedes Allen from Shelburne Sherr. If you are interested in volunteering for other civics education events, feel free to contact Christine Mueller at cmueller@pettitkohn.com.

For the second year Pettit Kohn Attorney & Team Captain Jenna Leyton led her team in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life campaign. The event took place in downtown San Diego on Saturday, August 21-22, 2010 where Jenna and her Pettit Kohn team members walked around Embarcadero North for 24 hours.
Funds raised support The American Cancer Society which offers many free programs for patients and survivors, including rides to and from treatment; the Cancer Survivors Network for support; beauty products for patients to help them restore their self-confidence after debilitating treatment; and much more.
This year’s Relay weekend was an enormous success, raising approximately $150,000 (compared to last year’s $70,000) to aid in the fight against cancer. The monetary support provided is invested wisely. 75% of funds raised in CA will be spent on national and California based research, prevention, early detection, treatment, and patient support services. This accomplishment would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and support of all of Relay’s participants and donors. A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in and/or donated to Relay for Life!

We would like to congratulate Mark Bloom for all his efforts towards his campaign for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year 2010 title. The winners of the Man and Woman of the Year were announced at the Grand Finale held in The Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater on April 10, 2010. The group of 11 (5 men and 6 women) raised over $350,000, with Mark individually raising over $20,000. All money raised benefits The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society programs, including research, patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) campaign is a fundraising competition in communities across the U.S. in which participants vie for the title of Man or Woman of the Year. They raise funds for blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. The titles are awarded to the men and women in each community who raise the most funds during the ten-week campaign; the top local fundraisers in the country also win the national titles.
